What's on your table? General Tabletop Game Discussion

Nice! I want to get this on the table again.

Looks like you got a recent shipment in with Natives and Legends.

Nice!!! Glad you enjoyed it. That dragon on your table looks fearsome. Their hairball spell must be devastating! hahaha

I’m circling back to Tainted Grail: Kings of Ruin, which is on our table still. We’re getting near the end and have been discussing why this one is falling a bit flatter than the original games. And we decided it came down to it being a bit more repetitive. In the first TG games you never really knew what was coming next, and sometimes weren’t even sure of what you were supposed to be doing at the current moment. Which was as much a pain in the ass as it was wonderous (if you were into it, and we were).

Well, Kings of Ruin did away with the grind and the uncertainty in favor of enclosed zones. And each zone follows a similar pattern despite having a very different story. Go up against multiple iterations of the area boss. Seek out their weaknesses among the various locations. Complete the story. Etc… But ultimately because the guardrails were so much more apparent the game lost a bit of its wonder. It certainly plays more smoothly, but going into a new area we know pretty much what to expect and the order of things that need done without the specifics of the story. And oddly, it made us yearn for the mess of the original, even with its grindiness, and even that one chapter we played for over 12 hours going back and forth across the map unsure of what we were supposed to do. It maybe went too hard the other way for our tastes, with so much certainty of what to do.

A post was split to a new topic: Thrashing the Void: A Highland Fling with Warp’s Edge

Been waiting a long time for this one – glad to hear its a fun little creepy crawler. Have always loved mucking around with the map decks so I hope the gameplay is as cool as the graphic design

Appreciate this perspective since I’ve been considering getting Kings of Ruin since I’m a fan of the original. I play the OG with the story mode which gives a bit less pressure to everything. The non- linearity, open feel of the original campaign is pretty magical in my experience. I still think the writing is probably the best I’ve seen from a board game. I still haven’t touched the other two campaigns (three with Red Death) so I think I have plenty of material to get through and Kings of Ruin can be held off on.

Oh yeah, if you haven’t hit the other two original campaigns yet I wouldn’t see reason to pick up Kings of Ruin. You may want to look into the 2.0 update packs? At least for Red Death. We never actually got into Red Death because of talk about how broken it was. But I believe that’s been fixed now. And all that 2.0 update stuff was wrapped into the KoR crowdfunding campaign.

KoR is definitely lower pressure than OG Tainted Grail though. We rarely had to farm any resources or worry much about the time constraints on the normal mode. But yeah, the magic just didn’t hit as consistently this time around for us. I’d rather go back and cycle through the originals again than pick this one back up.

Offset squares for a board structure is something I would like to see more often. It has strengths similar to using hexes but also seems more accessible some how.

Gearing up to do a proper dive back into Dungeon Degenerates with all the Kickstarter backlog stuff I have been meaning to get to. I thought I’d celebrate kicking things off with an Etsy upgrade. This seller got the memo on what the job required!

Those look interesting… I’m still trying to find the my preferred method for those counter… Currently I designed this print that uses 4 count-down D20s. But I will probably revisit when the I get the new content next year. (probably some correctly coloured dice may help)
