I finally got the updated Forgotten Depths to the table now that it’s smaller in box size (thank god) and richer in expansions. Man, this is one of the great dungeon crawlers, so unique, and one of my favorite games I found through the Dungeon Dive. So much to discover and explore through repeated plays. A game that truly rewards you for investing time into it. And that art is sublime.
Paper Apps Dungeon
I can’t quite recall where I first saw the Gladden notebook games, but I remember thinking they were charming enough to order a set on the spot. Naturally, they just sat untouched on the shelf. I took them on a trip last month, hoping their minimal footprint might justify their existence.
I’ve been gravitating toward more analog experiences in an effort to spend less time glued to all things digital. Paper Apps are palm-sized, with a simple and addictive loop, each a self-contained little distraction.
There are several different games, each printed in a flip-book format. Despite being pre-printed, every notebook is unique—assembled using a seeded system that mixes and matches the pages to generate distinct combinations and layouts.
You roll a die and bounce around a pre-generated dungeon, gathering gold and bonking monsters. Every few floors, you might encounter a denizen or a merchant, make a few choices, then press ever downward.
A clever little flourish is the “pencil die”: a hexagonal pencil that doubles as a six-sided die. In practice, though, rolling pencils leads mostly to floor-chasing and questionable randomness. I ended up reverting to a dice app, ironically defeating the whole analog push—but needs must.
Perfect for a quick flight from London to Aberdeen. I perished ignominiously on Floor 9 (out of 45), but reincarnated and carried on like a good little dungeon crawler.
Sometimes, a tiny book of mazes is all you need.
I have the Lucky Duck version of Paper App Dungeon in my glovebox of my car. Perfect to play while waiting in the car (eg. to pickup someone at the airport). Also makes you feel like a detective on a stake out writing in your notepad.
I have this version too. Super fun experience.
I see a random seed on the first page.. Curious if every copy is unique… Mine is 000-101-082
Just bought myself a pack of the gladden paper apps! Thanks for the recommendations
Playing this ‘Pagequest’ game designed many moons ago by my friends James and Chris in 1997). My character is not fairing very well as I still need to get a handle on the combat puzzle. But it’s got a pretty unique spell casting system.
I don’t know if @glastyngames still has this available but I found my copy in my folder of notes from Protospiele #2 back in East Lansing , MI from 2002 I believe.
This all looks pretty rad!
HeroQuest Dungeon Report “Echoes of the Witch Queen”:
Not so long ago, our heroes faced the Black Banner and fought the Witch Lord, his Queen Kessandria and the Captain of the Forgotten Legion Skulmar, and saved the Realm. But as with all those who embrace the perversion of necromancy, failure is not always fatal and death is not always final. Loretome reveals that the Witch Queen is risen from the great beyond and has returned.
Ithil Anar (Elf), Ser Lichen (Knight), Tater (Druid) and Nez (Dwarf, definitely NOT a Skaven) enter the dungeon and almost immediately fall into a pit of darkness. But their luck is turning around! They find a map that reveals the Witch Queen’s location, smash through some undead minions, uncover a secret door and head straight to Kessandria and Skulmar. The battle isn’t easy, but they quickly subdue and take captive Skulmar and defeat Kessandria. Pretty straightforward, or so it seems.
As they are turning to depart, Kessandria raises from the dead (again) and resurrects the entire room of undead guardians. She’s nothing if not persistent! The heroes hack the Witch Queen down again, wipe themselves off and return to the surface, where Mentor informs them that they did not find the magic source that kept resurrecting Kessandria and that she would surely return to call the legions of the undead back to the Black Banner once more! At least, Skulmar has finally been captured!
Haha, vintage print-and-play! Combat system might make you wish you could just chuck some dice, right? Files for anyone interested…
Quest for the Auburn Pelt on BGG
I went printing crazy today after watching Daniel’s video. I also bought an EcoTank printer on his recommendation! Ready for some solo Mausritter tomorrow!
Are you liking the printer? It’s always so hard to make recommendations on things like that, so I hope I didn’t steer you wrong. The colors look nice!
My first game of One Deck Dungeon. My archer fell while dealing a death blow to the dragon. Still a loss.
I had to scan the rules to be able to read small print on the back page. Lol.
It’s good! I wish I’d spent a bit more and got the one you got that can do automatic duplex–I got the bottom of the line model that only does one-sided. But other than that it’s great, and it costs as much as one toner cartridge for my color laser printer!
I have had so much fun with this game! Sometimes the dice love you, sometimes they break your heart.
Just an fyi, you can sleeve all the playing cards and everything still fits in the box, except the cardboard divider insert.
Cool. Just picked this up with the forest of shadows expansion up 2nd hand, so still figuring the best way to store. 3d printed a character stand that holds all the upgrades nicely ,but this one doesn’t fit the box, so will try a couple other models.
It took me a year to open Heroquest. It took me a month to paint all the minis. It took me five minutes with the app to put everything back in the box. It took me another year to order Infinite Dungeon. Now I’m finally going to give it another go!
Awesome! Enjoy, infinite dungeon is such a necessity!
First quest complete! Watching @Dungeondive ‘s video made it super easy to get into! I just wish I’d sprung for the Heroic Feats deck too…
