May I ask:
(a) when you did play tabletop games what sort of thing(s) did you enjoy most?
and/or
(b) what kind of tabletop gaming experience are you trying to find in a simple/easy place to start that we might recommend?
I don’t intend this question to be overwhelming – there is truly no wrong answer, including “I don’t care really, just want to find something I can stick to for an hour.” I’m just thinking that since there’s so much out there, maybe we can try to narrow the ballpark of what might work for you.
I started buying mostly for me to play with my wife which started with Conan the miniature game . Then I moved to solo things like sword and sorcery, Solomon Kane, fallen land, tainted grail and rad zone totality to name a few
I love solo board games as I can do them at my own pace and build scenery ect.
I loved Conan and Solomon Kane as am a huge Robert E Howard fan
Then started to buy things like dragonbane forbidden lands to try a solo rpg but and some child friendly games for the future like heroes quest, but life happens and death decides certain things
Now it’s just me mostly solo as my wife isn’t really interested in board games much anymore.
I’m into fantasy a lot
I just don’t know where to start it’s overwhelming as so many old Kickstarters ECT have arrived over the whole that are still boxed it’s a bit of a struggle to think of something to start
Sorry if this is too much or something I’m a bit mentally scattered these days
You are absolutely in the right place to be asking this question There are a lot of folks here who are big Robert E Howard fans, who have played those same games you mentioned, and who are probably already on the way with recommendations. I am less familiar with the sword and sorcery themes, so I have less to say off the top of my head, but I will think on it and get back with anything I think up.
I don’t know if these suggestions will be of interest to you, but here are a few games I thought of that are lightweight and quick (in no particular order):
My City Roll & Write (quick, simple, easy fun. Roll 3 dice and draw the shape shown on the map)
Dungeons, Dice, & Danger (Roll dice and move through a dungeon, collecting treasure and defeating monsters along the way)
Doom Pilgrim (tarot card “choose your own adventure” style game, but 75% of the cards are a Yeti situation )
Judgemint of the Realm Lords (mint-tin sized package, a little more setup, plays a little slower but my current obsession so )
All of these are really easy to start, play pretty quickly (I’ve literally lost on the second card I’ve chosen of Doom Pilgrim, which may sound frustrating but I laughed) and have a really small footprint. Judemint does have a little more setup, but that’s in comparison to the others I’ve listed. You can set it up in a few minutes.
If you have a printer and don’t mind to cut out 18 cards, I really can recommend the ButtonShy games. 3$ each for the Print and Play files is absolute fair.
I can also buy the printed version, but I am not living in the US so PnP is the better option for me.
And many of their games are solo playable or full solo games.
Someone(s) in this forum keeps recommending Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Mummy’s Mask, and I have been considering picking it up. Classic rpg system, fantasy theming, a boardgame feel, and solo-able.
I know the IP less well but Thorgal: The Adventure Game looks interesting/beautiful and gameplay may be novel and interesting: More puzzley than hack-and-slash combat. @modius has written up some reviews of it.
(Modius is also one of the Robert E Howard / Conan fans who may have more to say in reply to your question.)
That someone(s) is likely me or one of em. For me PACG is my most played solo game. It’s got an incredibly simple gameplay loop once you get it down but a ton of depth and discovery to be had over a long campaign. One reason I think it has stuck so well for me is that I find it incredibly relaxing to play; it reminds me of playing standard poker deck solitaire. I can shut my mind off pretty easily with this game, go through some fun adventures with small incremental rewards each session that mirrors the same sense of progression in a game like Diablo. It helped me get through some of the harder times during the pandemic. Mummy’s Mask is the best iteration of it. I recommend checking out the app on Iphone or Ipad (steam too) to get a sense of if it’s something for you. The app also really helps you understand the game well and I found returning to the paper version much easier rules wise after having played the app.
If you’re a Conan fan (I am too), and you’re looking for a low barrier entry solo rpg, Kal-Areth is really great. Kal-Arath by Castle Grief
It’s only 54 pages but packs a lot in the rulebook. Very easy to pick up and play through a day or two of in game hex crawling for 10-15 minutes.
In general, I’d recommend any ‘slow questing’ games. Eldritch Horror is my choice for that. I leave it set up on a table when I am playing. I’ll play a game round at a time (usually 15 minutes), leave it set up and come back to it later in the day or the next and play another round. I struggle with board game fatigue as well sometimes and I find this a great way to play without getting burnt out.
Rune was the one that struck me as something to consider - I had a great time messing around with the Print and Play version, and even drew my own black and white playing arena for use with some Mines of Moria columns and painted minis
You can’t go wrong!
One further suggestion: after you’ve chosen one and sat down with it, come back and tell us what you thought. Maybe this tiny bit of friendly “accountability” will encourage you to stick to it. Or maybe (like many of us, perhaps?) you find it just about as entertaining to think/talk about games as it is to actually play them. There’s plenty of ways to get back into the hobby without feeling like you have to finish full campaigns, or even full sessions. As Daniel sometimes puts it “everything is play.”
I decided to settle on kal-Arath
As it’s the easiest to get right now as printable game I’ve just printed it out and I shall start reading I’ll update again shortly
Thanks again
Just wanted to add one more game that I just played today and had a lot of fun with: Dungeon Hero Zine (vol. 1). A pnp dungeon crawl type that also happens to be pwyw on itch.io (iirc). I’ve played twice now and wanted to keep playing but life called me back. I’m going to pickup volumes 2 & 3 later though!
I also have Dungeon Hero Zine in my desk drawers and will pull it out from time to time when I want something light and fun!
Also, Daniel has a great tutorial on printing these out and cutting/stapling them that helped me get over the fear of somehow messing it up but it’s really very easy.
I got depressed and didn’t follow through. Which happens a lot that’s fine.
But after the new expansion arrived for sword and sorcery I procrastinated for days about opening it but tonight I setup the prologue quest for the first game in the series. It was daunting to setup to get to play is it was a bit confronting to do but it was an easy setup once I actually put myself into it. I played a test play to get used to it. For tomorrow I will start the game again from the very beginning and work my way through to the new content. I will do one quest a day to start with . I’ll repeat the prologue quest tomorrow and be ready for what comes.
