YouTube "only hands" videos

Hi, I’m not a creator or designer… yet.
But it’s something I’ve been toying with as an idea.
I also like journaling my thought process and had an idea that video format may be less time consuming than a written blog.

Do you prefer to see presenter’s faces when watching YouTube?

It’s never put me off, and channels like Geek Gamers and Lone Adventurer don’t seem limited by it.

It’s also more complicated for a novice to have multiple cameras.

I rarely want to see a face when watching board game stuff.

There are also channels like, uh…The Dungeon Dive that rarely show faces. LOL.

Well, yes. But you do sometimes show your face. Does it help viewers relate to you as a person and what you’re saying better?

My original idea was to have a little insert like Chris does on the Bastionland channel. But that requires 2 cameras if I’m also showing a tabletop.

For me, I mostly just want to focus on the game, and prefer not being a “board game personality.” As a viewer, I don’t feel more connected to a video when I see a presenter’s face. Some might, and for that there are options out there.

I’m clearly overthinking things for a project that doesn’t even exist yet.

I hope I can share without causing any offense…

I MUCH prefer seeing a presenter’s Face OR images of the game or artwork. It’s alright if a presenter turns the camera to the table to show off a game or unbox something. Point to the rule book - fine.

But i DESPISE hands waving in front of the camera above the table. It’s as annoying as someone who talks excessively with their hands. There are a few YouTube channels I watch that do this, and I honestly can’t watch the videos. I will turn it on and walk away so I can still hear the audio, without watching the pointless flapping hands.

Again, I mean no offense as I know this is sort of the standard method of filming Dungeon Dive videos. But truthfully, I’d much rather watch videos where your face is visible.

Interesting to hear people’s preferences for these things. I actually rarely watch anyone’s videos about anything. And Dungeon Dive has been an exception to that for years now. So I must be your opposite in this regard. I think it was quite a long time before I even caught a video that had Daniel’s face in it.

But now I’m thinking why stop at two hands? Pick up a 2nd person to wear the same shirt as you and throw a 3rd hand into all your videos. And never mention it under any circumstances.

LOL! Say goodbye to the Dungeon Dive.

I’ve actually been thinking about doing a video for April Fools where I don’t move my hands all. I’ll be like, “and check out this card!” with my hands firmly planted on the table so I don’t annoy people. Not sure for how long I could prolong the joke. Been something I’ve wanted to do for years.

I forget what video it was but I enjoyed your video where you kept manipulating the dice. Was a good one!

Haha. That was the comparison video between DUN, LoD, and DC.

I’m a TV producer and have thought about this while watching the Dive and personally I agree that there’s no need to see the presenter’s face. Daniel’s words and the components he points to are what’s relevant to me. I’ve recently thought that even actual play RPGs suffer from always watching the players (unless it’s a very expensive, time intensive production).

It’s also easier to shoot and edit and that means more videos.

However I did like seeing Daniel’s face once or twice so I know what he looks like! (And for me, his style which helps me contextualize him socially – also an anthropologist :))

I try to do about 4 talking head videos a year.

But yeah - I think the focus should be on the table. I’m not the “star” of the Dungeon Dive, the games are.

Some time I think some channels forget that. Channels like SU&SD, and NPI sometimes forget that, IMO. They focus on them as presenters and their writing skills. That’s just not my forte nor my desire for the channel.

I appreciate that. Love what you do but very glad the board games are the focus or the books. Always love your opinions however as they align with mine.
