Kingdom Legacy: Feudal Kingdom & Adventures Expansion

I just played through the base game with its three mini expansions and even added Feudal Kingdoms Adventures. (I bought both at Spiel 2025.)

For those who don’t know it… it’s a legacy card game in which you build your kingdom, make decisions, and thus create an empire shaped by you.

Sounds good, I thought, and off I went.

The game also introduces you to the mechanics and rules in a straightforward way. A lot happens in the first few rounds, with upgrades and new cards, and it feels pretty good. Things are progressing… but as the game goes on, it gets tougher. Each round, 2 cards are added, and it becomes increasingly difficult, or rather frustrating, to get the right resources at the right time to achieve further upgrades… then bandits, storms, and other obstacles are added… from then on, I felt like the game was playing me and I couldn’t really do anything about it. This feeling didn’t change until shortly before the end (card 70)… I had just enough resources in my play area to get the much-coveted upgrade when the bandit came along and ruined everything… new round, new “luck,” I thought… until the end… for me, it was a rather frustrating gaming experience rather than a satisfying one.

After that, I played the three small mini-expansions to see if it would stay that way… and it got better. The cards were more forgiving, and only a few rounds were played.

The expansion only lasted three rounds… in that time, it’s hardly possible (or for me) to make full use of it, so I would have to buy another one to be able to play more rounds…

Well, no thanks. I think I have a fundamental problem with legacy games. I don’t like destroying materials or rendering them unusable. It’s also not possible to play another round because the components are designed in such a way that this is not possible.

For many, it seems to be a great experience. I’m definitely not one of them. €20 poorer and one experience richer, that many people enjoy this game and I don’t.

Maybe it’s because I don’t really like EURO games or I just had a lot of bad luck in my rounds… ultimately, it doesn’t matter… after about 4-6 hours of playing, I’m happy to be done with it.

Been wanting to get Dungeon Degenerates back to the table for a while. Trying out the mission “I’m a Mess” from Mission Book 3. These degenerates are NOT great investigators.

Vagabond – Pulp Fantasy Roleplaying Game

I want to take just a second to talk about the Vagabond RPG. I’ve been reading through it, and I plan to get it to my table very soon. I really love everything this game appears to be doing. It looks ideal for solo play. There’s even a solo dungeon crawl included in the core rule book. I love how concise the writing is and how clean the whole presentation is. If you’re curious about it at all, you can download the Hero’s Handbook for free to see how things are presented. But be warned, that’s how I started and I immediately went to the website and bought the full PDF (and preordered the hardcover). I am just so incredibly impressed with this book.

This is really a passion project. There are still much mechanics in it and sometimes it feels a bit mechanically, but this game is one of the very rare roll and writes with a campaign and a story. And I really like the story. The second game is also no longer a roll & write, as far as I know. It is a dice placement & write game. But it has a branching story and a learn while playing rulebook, what I also really like. I will report how I like chapter 2, after playing it over the upcoming holiday season.

I had seen a couple secondhand copies floating around here in the States but I may have missed my chance. Here’s hoping a print-and-play option is made available down the line.

A print and play was initially planned, but never heard of it after the release. I also have to say, chapter 2 has over 100 cards included, so there is a retail release easier than the PnP version. But I can ask the designer or publisher, what the plans are. I am talking to them from time to time in a Facebook group.

My AH2e collection is now complete. Got this for a screaming deal at a local store today.

AH2nd edition is such a great game. I also own everything and during my time on the university, I played it a lot. This is a game, which will never leave my collection.

Yep. Same here. One of the few games I’ve sold and bought again. It’s too good.

Santa’s helper (aka my wife) is wondering what game I’d like so maybe I should suggest this one.

Things are getting increasingly expensive for it. I’d probably recommend Eldritch Horror these days if you don’t have that.

Is this the space version of dungeon lite?

Somehow I never liked Eldritch as much as I do Arkham horror. But you can still have a lot of fun with the base game only and this should not too expensive.

I sold all my AH2e stuff because it never clicked with my wife (rather have someone be playing it than let it sit in my closet). And neither of us were really into Eldritch Horror. But we both like Darkest Night for a game with a similar “run around and put out the fires” feel.

seems like… i never played the other version… have you?

What store are you shopping at that has that game for a good deal? (Assuming it’s in the wider Seattle area.)

Around the Table in Lynnwood. Now that I think about, they might have priced it based on the prices of the first edition, not realizing it was the revised version.

I got it for $50. It normally lists on eBay for over $100.
