I didn’t even finish the review before I bought a copy. Maybe I’ve learned to trust your opinion too much, but… space adventure!
Arydia
These past few weeks have seen me adventuring for Squills in the lands of Arydia. With the game left perpetually poised upon the table, my motley exiles stand ready for a swift foray when time permits. A fine, nostalgic romp that may well hold my attention to the very end.
Today this is on my table: a kiddo and Heroquest expansions. He’s bored by following the game rules so he treats HQ as though it’s just an awesome big box of toys.
Wait…
Haha. Love him just sitting in the table!
This looks familiar! It’s a bit of a kick when you spend years developing a game its mechanics and its art and someone comes along and pretty much takes all your ideas and throws a load of stock art together with some makeshift rules to create almost the same game you’ve spent so long on.
… I guess that’s life, But at 62 dollars for a gamecrafter quality product(before shipping) that’s steep!
EDIT: The designer of this game just got in touch with me, I know him, seems he’s just inspired by Devoured and other similar games and wanted to make somthing with all his favourite bits from games he loves so I guess I should be flattered really. Not everything in life is as black and white as my games, it appears😊
I can totally see how that would be bothersome at first glance. But I’m glad you eventually took it as flattery. Your game is now influencing works that come after it. High praise!
It’s really nothing like Devoured in how it plays or the theme. More like Iron Helm. Every game I love is just like another game. There are thousands of D&D / OSR clones. Hundreds of Talisman clones. That’s the nature of the genres and sub-genres and the industry. It’s what keeps this channel alive! just like, only different. Wouldn’t want it any other way.
I’m loving Arydia. The ease of play is crazy. Beer and pretzels casual exploration, with enough combat crunch to keep it interesting, but not at all brain burning. Just good old fasioned fun! Its sitting up at the top of may favorites with Dungeon Degenerates.
Yeah you’re right bud, chatted to the designer, alllll good!
It’s a super cool game.
I’ve only ever played Paupers’ Ladder (which I love), and I did not expect to be interested in a zombie game after the over-saturation of the genre for the past decade, but the look of this is drawing me in.
I really like Paul Stapleton’s art. My wife got me a Christmas gift a couple years ago that turned me into a Paupers’ Ladder character. Also, immortalizing the goat that I bottle fed from infancy.
Love those printed QR codes! Great idea.
Paupers’ Ladder
Embarked upon my first four-player venture into Pauper’s Ladder. I typically tread its well-worn paths in solitude but it was a delightful journey with travel companions. Alas, at its full complement the game stretches itself too thin (4 hours!) and drags into the vexing “search for the last ingredient that never turns up” cycle in the waning stages. Restricting the game to 2 Virtues might be mandatory to maintain sanity.
Last week I got Quest for the Lost Pixel with all its expansions to the table for the first time.
Was impressed with how all the content adds to the story of the game without weighing it down. I think I triggered pretty much all the new activities at one point before I had to stop at LVL 7.
Eager to try the fan made rules for coop adventure now.
Love seeing Pauper’s Ladder and Quest for the Lost Pixel on the tables!
