Top 10 Dungeon Crawls and Adventure games by player count

Hi all

I have a number of games (mostly inspired by Daniel) which I tend to play and enjoy them Solo. However, I have a gathering with friends and I wanted to find which would work well with a group, and hence I went out and tried to find lists of Adventure and Dungeon Crawl games that were considered top by player count, but I could not find any.
Does anyone know of any such lists? It would be great to have one in this community, I do not know how, but I am sure there is enough knowledge around to create that list, not sure what would be the method.
And final and more selfish, out of the following games, which ones would you rank on top for multi player, ideally for 4 people?

Dungeon Degenerates
Hexplore it
Tales from the Red Dragon Inn
Tanares Adventures
Maladum
Earth Under Siege
Adventure Tactics: Domiane’s Tower
Hellboy

Thank you all for your dungeon diving knowledge!

On BoardGameGeek under the game info it lists not only the official player count as listed on the box, but they also have the “community recommended player count” and “plays best with” or something along those lines.

How often do you feel bgg does not align with your taste? I kinda have a feeling that it lacks the reasoning behind the number. Is it your preferred number of players or the only player count you have played of a game? For instance if I voted for DD, I could only vote for 1, and it is great, does it mean it sucks at 4? It probably does, but does it?

Please take a look at Dragons Down, if you have not already done so. It was Daniel’s pick for game of the year in 2024.

I am all in on Dragons down (not Daniel’s fault, or is it?) but delivery date of the KS is way past end of July when the gaming week will take place.
I guess that will be next year’s pick!

Well, looking at Dungeon Degenerates as the example, I fully agree with the voting tally. I’ve played with 1, 2 and 4. And while I’ve enjoyed it with different player counts, I do think it’s best at 1-2 just as the BGG community voted. Looking at a few other of my favorite games, I also agree with the stats.

That said, I’m not primarily a “solo gamer” which if you are, that may entirely change your ranking.

It’s always Daniel’s fault… in my mind.

Understood on the timing.

It is not an Dungeon Crawler, but I really like Kingdom Death Monster and this is something, which you not want to play solo. There is too much bookkeeping. There is the perfect player count 3 for the 4 fighters. There is often the problem with early death of 1 fighter in combat and with 3 players, each one can still play 1 character.

I play at the moment more family friendly crawlers.
In my opinion Stuffed Fables is also perfect for 4 players. And we played this in a group of 4 adults and we all had fun. I will soon playthrough this game with my children.

I also played Wonder Book, which also works perfect with 4 and has an absolut stunning table presence.

I’ve played quite a few and so much depends on the group you’re playing with and what you all are looking for. As I’m sure you’re aware the dungeon crawls can be quite involved and when you’re playing with 3+ people, turns can become longer and forward progress can slow to a literal crawl. I’d want to know what everyone’s expectations are as games I enjoy solo (Hexplore It, Tales from the Red Dragon Inn) would be very different with 4 people. I’d play Tales with someone else; not sure about 3 or 4. I might play Hexplore It with someone else, but probably still only as a solo game as my preference).

Either way, I’d probably recommend starting with lite campaign style games rather than jumping in the deep end with something that is going to likely take 6+ hours and/or multiple sessions.

I think Dragons Down is a great solo game, but can’t see it as a 4 player game.

Interesting take. I think it is often played in multiplayer, from the feedback I am getting.

I’ve just found this entire treasure trove of content (youtube + website) and my wallet is not prepared for the reckoning. I already had, Mini Rogue and Iron Helm on my radar but now… Dungeon Degenerates, Dragons Down, Questbound, Quest for the Lost Pixel, One Card Dungeon. Wow.

Check out Rogue Dungeon. Not a bad price for a great game!
I’m also a big fan of dragons down, super stoked about the upcoming expansions!

So we finally had our sessions. The results were different from expected, very interesting:
Tanares Ultimate edition (3players) 4 scenarios and 1 city phase - 10+ hours: Complete fail, no one liked it.
HexploreIt VotDK: 3 plays (one 5 player and two 3 player) 12+ hours in total: great success, everyone enjoyed themselves, the games were long but never dragged. We just wanted to keep going and gain more power ups.
Adventure Tactics (3 player): 3 scenarios, less than 3 hours. ok so far, will continue playing but need to adjust classes since the party does not feel compensated.
Zombicide Marvel: 3 plays at 4 player 2 hours in total. 2 miserable losses at the Avengers tower scenario… quite fun, we enjoyed it but were confused by being crushed on a game that felt so easy at the beginin. Should have taken it more seriously to win, anyhow we had tons of fun.

How is Maladum? I have been really looking into that one

Game system is solid, tons of options to perform and really good variety. Fun NPCs running around that may help or hinder you. But beware, you have to really like building the scenarios. If you find it tedious and a necessary evil, you will not enjoy it. You have to actually find some pleasure in putting together the bits and pieces, walls, torches and levers on the walls, chests with loot inside, a well here a tomb there, there is so much set up.
