A Normal Guy Plays Dark Souls - Part 2 - Ringing the First Bell of Awakening

Part two runs from the Hellkite Drake’s bridge to the first Bell of Awakening, and Daniel (@dungeondive) spends as much of it explaining design as playing. He drives the dragon off its perch with the bow rather than fighting it, and uses the detour to flag the Drake Sword as a noob trap — enormously strong early, no stat scaling, and the weapon he leaned on for half his very first playthrough without understanding what it was costing him.

Undead Parish follows: the sprint through the portcullis before a hollow reaches the lever, Andre of Astora on reinforcement versus ascension, and a defence of Dark Souls’ durability system as mild next to Breath of the Wild. He frees Lautrec purely to kick him off the ledge without aggroing him, collecting the Ring of Favor and Protection — a second trap, too good to leave off, destroyed the moment you remove it.

Then Solaire is summoned for the Bell Gargoyles, the first time in roughly eight years, and both go down.

The best passage is the elevator back to Firelink. On his first playthrough it took 30 hours to reach that shortcut, and the shock of it is where he fell for the game. He ties it to limited fast travel — you learn a world you cannot skip — and to why Elden Ring’s open world leaves him cold.

Does a game teach you its world better by withholding fast travel, or is that just friction we’ve learned to romanticise?
