Daniel (@dungeondive) looks at Fortune, Fame & Glory, a free print-and-play adventure game by Joseph Mills (of Ganesha Games and Four Against Darkness work, with an Alone Against the Weird West book promised) and art by Jason Glover, Glover’s second appearance in a row on the channel. Daniel printed the cards on plain paper and slipped them into Frazetta-backed sleeves, the same deck he uses for his Talisman house rules.
The game is Escape the Dark Castle simple: lay the encounter deck in a ten-column diamond, start at the left, and flip a card per step, choosing north or south as the map widens. Three crossings, then a random final boss: a guarded artifact, a treasure hoard, or the Dark One with nineteen health and triple damage on a six. Combat is Fighting Fantasy style, both sides rolling a d6 plus a bonus, higher wins, one damage. Fate points nudge a die by two, gold turns up here and there, and every four cards you eat one food or lose a health (Daniel would prefer five, since a crossing is ten cards). Followers join for three cards and roll their own dice; his warrior helped skewer a skeleton before the swamp leeches got her.
His journey ran from a night attack through prison, sewers, friendly barbarians and a night at the inn. Not much strategy, not many choices, but for the price of ink and a rainy afternoon he finds it hard not to recommend.
What is the most fun you have had with a print-and-play that cost you nothing but paper and ink?
