I stumbled across a copy of a Star Wars children’s book and had to grab it for a few bucks. Published in 1977, so it is an almost immediate celebration of (or, attempt to cash in on) A New Hope before anyone knew much about the universe. The attempts to fill in blanks are pretty goofy, as is the whole story. But I had to get it because CHEWY GETS A MEDAL!! Also the watercoloring is amazing even if the linework for organic characters is a little meandering. Things can get a little muddy but there’s an incredible chrome effect on the outside of the Millennium Falcon and a psychedelic interior. Chewy almost reminds me of something out of Dark Venture.
I only have the bibliophonic contrivance known as audible — the same old wizard narrates the collection of librums with the sparked enthusiasm of a dying sun.
I’m at chapter 4 and I like it a lot. I like the blending of a classic medieval setting with weird, grimdark and religious elements. A great suggestion from the Dungeon dive.
I’ve been finding a lot of joy in graphic novels lately, and this one may top the list so far in 2026. Possibly the first true manga I’ve ever read, and I binged it in one sitting. Really excellent storytelling and art within the genre it’s fitted to.
