I am reading Walter Jon Williams’ Dread Empire’s Fall and enjoying it. It’s a little contrived but not in a bad way, reminds me of a lot of the Star Wars “Legends” (former EU) books from Tyer, Zahn, Stackpole, Anderson, etc. I got some used mass market paperbacks and, for the first 2 books, got an edition that has some great, fun art tucked under stylishly cut front covers. Sadly the artist is uncredited.
I have also found myself drawn to comics/illustration lately. These are all great. I was especially pleased to discover Power Pulp (and Domino Books, though nothing shown here was from them). Skinner is my spirit animal.
I actually started reading my first ever Star Wars EU/Legends novels. Reading Heir to the Empire. I’m enjoying it. It’s really fun, and Thrawn is awesome.
One hundred percent agree. I think her, Pratchett, Vonnegut, Douglas Adams, and Amy Hempel are just writers I can read on loop. Plot aside, just like reading them talk, something about the beats of it all.
There’s a Hunter S. Thompson doc where they talk about him typing The Great Gatsby over and over again cause he thought it had the perfect rhythm.
One of my favorites. I love the change Ged goes through. For like 1/2 the book you kind of hate him. He’s a brat, and just totally unlikable. But then, the tragedy, and he transforms into a completely sympathetic dude.
I agree on The Hobbit, one of my absolute favorites and I love it more than LOTR. Just something about the adventure and the spirit of the book just draws me in so much more.
Recently picked up some cool retro books from Half Priced Books and started reading this one. Surprising me so far, really well written and the first chapter was interesting and has me intrigued so going to read the rest.
