I would start with Book 5, The Walrus and the Warwolf. It’s standalone, and probably the best of the bunch.
Wow that’s crazy, he has such a good writing style too
Thanks, last night I found a UK seller on Thrift Books and bought a few including that one for a couple bucks a piece.
Went ahead and ordered some Max Allan Collins Dick Tracy anthology since I was paying for shipping already.
Oh that looks cool! I’ll need to look into it.
I recently read Silverberg’s “Tower of glass”. This was my first Silverberg and it was great. Android slaves develop a secret religion devoted to their creator. It’s concise, fast paced and full of interesting ideas. I definitely want to read more from him.
Next I’m gonna try Alan Dean Foster’s Midworld.
Currently reading The Talisman after learning a 3rd book was coming this Fall from Stephen King. I haven’t read the original since I was in high school - probably around 1990, so it’s been a real trip to experience it again.
Did you dig Black House? I know folks tend to like that one more than Talisman.
I probably read Talisman and Eyes of the Dragon around the same time and sometimes get bits of the two mixed up. So when Black House came out, I just skipped it. However, I’m thinking about trying again.
2001 was a weird year for me (work) and this book was released right after 9/11 as I recall; I don’t have any recollection of reading it - maybe bits and pieces? I’m going to read it right after I finish the Talisman this time, that’s for sure! There’s a few King books that I know I read but for some reason I really just don’t remember much about them. Must be part of getting older. ![]()
I’m really excited for the new Talisman. Going to reread Black House soon to get prepped. Hoping there are some strong Dark Tower connections in the new one.
I still need to read the Dark Tower series. I own it, started the first and kind of bounced off it years ago. I have to try again.
I read the first 3 so long ago that in my head The Dark Tower series is only a trilogy.
Also, the only thing I remember is a description of how confident a dude’s gotta be to fight well while naked. For some reason my impressionable young mind soaked that up. And now, the first thing I do in a fight is make sure to display my confidence. A winning maneuver. Thanks, Mr. King!
Currently on book 4 of The Dark Tower. Stumbled a bit getting into it initially but now I am fully into it.
It’s really great. Glad I started.
And it’s very much boosted my interest and affection for the weird west genre and related media - Weird West on the PS4, Blood West on the PS5, Hard West on the Switch… Picked up a copy of Doom Town weird west edition, as well, though haven’t gotten that to the table yet.
It has helped me remember the face of my father, which is good. I like my dad.
May all beings be free from resentment and conflict.
May all beings be free from physical suffering.
May all beings be free from mental suffering.
May all beings be free from danger.
May all bodies and minds be at peace.
I really enjoyed the first of these two. I haven’t got to the second in the series. I highly recommend the novella, ‘Black Starkight’, as well which continues the story from ‘the Emerald Lotus’ .
I went through a big Hanh phase about 20 years ago, when I was deconstructing my own Christian faith and leaving the faith. He’s very good. He and Father Thomas Merton helped me become a non-Christian. ![]()
My dude! Congratulations! It can be incredibly hard to leave any organized faith for a multitude of reasons.
Might I suggest you check out “Thoughts without a Thinker” and the follow-up, “Going to Pieces Without Falling Apart” by Mark Epstein. They are INCREDIBLE.
Then there is the classic and super easy read, “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck” by Mark Manson.
These all draw lines and practices between eastern meditation and mindfulness to western psychology and mental health therapy.
