Daniel (@dungeondive) celebrates the Deeper Caverns expansion for Stalagbite, calling it a near-perfect expansion that elevates an already excellent 2024 game into genuine top-10 territory. This small-box expansion demonstrates how variety and thoughtful design can transform a game without adding complexity.
The expansion introduces the ethereal Aether Fish—enemies that drain glory and move through walls—alongside new goblin units and variants. New discoveries include chambers (random locations packed with encounters), treasure tokens with unknown contents, and an entirely new shop system. Dwarves can now choose between axes and spears, each with distinct tactical tradeoffs: axes deal more damage, spears offer better defense and reach.
The card additions are staggering: six journey cards introducing travel hazards, six shop cards representing different vendors, a massive kit deck enabling character build variety, new goblin cards, expanded poison decks with effects like “Froggled” (can’t jump pits), new cavern rules, critical hit cards, relic cards, and dwarven skills. Each category roughly doubles or triples its original size, creating seemingly infinite replayability.
Daniel emphasizes how this expansion solves the base game’s only perceived weakness: insufficient build variety. The kit cards, combined with shop selection and relic discovery, let each dwarf feel genuinely unique. Combined with the new chambers mechanic providing constant surprises, Stalagbite now offers the perfect blend of simplicity, variety, and competitive cooperation. The expansion ships by end of 2025, making this an incredibly strong package worth backing.
