Digital Dive — Daniel (@dungeondive) checks out Sol Cesto, a roguelike dungeon crawler on Steam (~$12, early access).
The game is pure press-your-luck. You click a row and have percentage chances to interact with each tile — monsters, treasure, traps, or healing. Combat alternates between physical and magical, and progression means unlocking attractions (biases toward certain tile types) and permanent upgrades between runs.
What stands out:
- Gorgeous whimsical art style reminiscent of Paupers’ Ladder
- Dead simple mechanics, but genuinely tense decisions
- Unlockable heroes, stone/metal statue boons, and a meta-progression loop
- Gold only banks if you find a bucket and pull it up — die without banking and you lose it all
- Would make a perfect mobile game (meant as a compliment)
Daniel didn’t reach the boss on his demo run, but had a great time with the charm, humour, and tension. Press-your-luck is one of his favourite mechanisms, and Sol Cesto nails it.
Have you tried Sol Cesto or similar press-your-luck roguelikes? Does the art style appeal to you?
