Runeboundless: Hacking a light RPG

Having purchased all five big box expansions I’m looking to make the most of them! First idea: loot drops. I separated out treasures valued one to four gold pieces. Instead of taking the gold after a challenge, you can draw an item. I wanted to break down The limit of only getting gear in cities and making it more like an RPG.

I also want to mix up the challenge stacks from various expansions, possibly creating themed challenge decks. I don’t think the different card backs will break up the fog of war too badly.

If anyone has other ideas, please put them here!

Many of the big box challenge cards would work in base runebound. I don’t care about different card backs.

So I’m making stacks around themes like wild animals, undead, Vorakesh, deadly plants, green skins, etc.

Could work well for a lot of scenarios : the heroes walking into a war between two sides, Yojimbo style, or a greenskin invasion, or taking down a particular faction, maybe allying with another…

scored these for about 15 bucks each in a thrift store. Lots of extra stuff to work with including a different endgame with the adventure expansion.

I found three good ones in Germany too, shipping was reasonable.

I have now made a significant investment in the game and I plan to use it as a hex crawl RPG Using various random quest generators, but I realize that the simple three-skill system might be a little limiting. Do you think it’s limiting?

I do find myself wishing that I had more skills to work with like in third edition.
I thought of just adding the 3e skill cards and the challenge cards to 2e, or maybe just the challenge cards that ask you to roll either a skill check or the travel dice. (Since the combat systems are not compatible.) Do you think that would work?

I actually found these on the geek for $36 plus $10 shipping from Germany. I guess no one tried to buy them because they were overseas, but the guy was happy to ship to America. And got in right before the dumb ass tariffs went in.

So I looked at the RB 3e skill cards and about 3/5 of them can be used in RB 2e!

Have to figure out how to incorporate. Maybe each player can 1) draw and carry a certain number of cards (3?) at the beginning, or maybe 1) draw one instead of choosing an XP token.
