Rise of the Ronin (PS5)

I recently purchased a PS5, and I’ve been really enjoying Rise of the Ronin. It feels like a nice mix between the newer Assassin’s Creed games and Nioh. I really enjoy the historical setting, especially after having watched the amazing new Shogun series. The combat is serious awesome, and, best of all, it has difficulty settings, so those of us who aren’t great at video games can play on easy mode and not get totally destroyed!

I’m not sure if the game will hold my interest long enough to complete, but I’m sure I’ll get ~40 or so hours of enjoyment out of it, more than enough to justify the purchase.

I like Rise of the Ronin quite a bit. It seemed to get derided for subpar graphics during some of its gameplay previews. But the moment-to-moment gameplay, exploration, combat, loot - all make for a fun experience. I wish the exploration was a bit more fleshed out, rewarding you for delving into the nooks and crannies of the map but it’s still good. And I like how they took a page from Nioh’s book with the loot system, but made it slightly more understandable and rewarding. Creating outfit sets with certain weapons is fun. I stalled on it around the 60% mark (due to finite time and my attention span) but intend to return. I think it will be viewed as a hidden gem years down the road.

Oh and yeah - it totally made me want to watch Shogun. Haven’t started yet but have heard great things.

Yeah. The graphics aren’t great. Thats a fact. But once you start playing, the game is so fun that its easy to ignore the subpar looks.

Agreed. I’m of an age where I was entertained by 2-3 block avatars. Super great graphics aren’t super important to me, but I know they can be to others.

Interested to hear what other games you enjoy on the PS5 on here.

I’m loving the heck out of Returnal, and will definitely be picking up Astrobot next paycheck.

“Returnal” is my de facto answer when folks ask “what game should I play on the PS5?” Such a strong vision with fantastic execution.

Picked up Astro Bot over the weekend. Super solid title - looks fantastic, plays great, and has a bunch of clever Sony video game nods.

Shogun is surprisingly good. Probably because it sticks to the vibe of the source material rather than trying to make a “modern” interpretation of the novel.

The series that surprised me more in this genre was Blue Eye Samurai. Excellent.

Blue Eyed Samurai has been pretty cool as far! I love the noodle guy.

Blue Eye Samurai was top notch. Between Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Castlevania, this and Arcane it feels like a great time for animation series.

Serieses? Seriesii? I need more coffee.

Glad to hear that about Shogun. My slight hesitation was a suspicion it would fall into normal drama series tropes and lose immersion. Sounds like that’s not the case.

Shogun is as good as prestige television can get. Lavish. And the violence is off the charts gross. I can’t even begin to imagine the amount of work that went into the series. They even have the Japanese speakers speak an archaic form of Japanese that is time appropriate. The details are insane.
