Hi. I have a few games that involve exploring a region of a larger map by laying a grid of cards.
This is great for generating a random region, but I’d also like to apply an overall environment specific rule, so for instance the spooky woods are functionally different to the burning desert.
Does anybody know of any decks of cards or board games that do this so I can get them or at least glean some inspiration?
I’m sure I’ve seen one mentioned somewhere recently, but have a memory like a sieve!
If you’re just looking for inspiration then Shadows of Brimstone has world cards that do this for every different OtherWorld. I’m not sure that they would all make sense to someone unfamiliar with the mechanics of the game though…
And I imagine the rules you want to make would need to be tailored specifically for what you’re playing. But I’d personally just start by thinking about what’s the flavor of specific difficulty for each type of zone.
Spooky woods could have a fear mechanic if that’s in your system, or alternatively some sort of roll to prevent you from getting lost or wandering into a random square of the grid instead of the one you intended.
Deserts are hard for resources, so something to do with needing to scavenge for food/water or survive on less maybe? A mild damage check that continues on each turn because of the scorching sun?
Wish I had something better for inspiration off the top of my head. You see this stuff in games all the time but I just can’t think of anything specific right now that would do the trick.
