Posthuman: Survive/Evolve - Take a Look

If you like lots of decks of little cards, boy howdy. Daniel (@dungeondive) takes a look at Posthuman: Survive/Evolve, a post-apocalyptic adventure he picked up second-hand on Craigslist, a Kickstarter edition bundled with the five-and-six-player expansion he flatly does not recommend using. He has only simulated it with two characters and played the solo mode, and he dislikes the solo mode for a specific reason: it drops the mutation and scar decks, which he considers the game’s most interesting idea. Scars are kept secret, and once a player accumulates enough they can choose, or be forced, to turn mutant, discard their gear and start playing a different game against everyone still human.

The rest of the video walks the sprawl of components: skill, equipment, weapon, armour, supply and event decks, three tiers of encounter, followers, and thematic touches like an MP3 player that restores morale until the battery dies. Characters eat every turn or starve, and ammo is scarce enough to make ranged combat a real decision. A demonstration turn covers the four actions (forage, scout, move, camp) and a two-phase fight against a hoarder, ranged first and then three rounds of melee. Daniel acknowledges the ambiguous rulebook and the flat reception at launch, but thinks three players is the sweet spot for a game that deserved better, and notes copies now go cheap.

Daniel wishes there were more post-apocalyptic board games and can only name a handful. Which post-apocalyptic tabletop game has done the setting justice for you?
