Moonring - Old School Ultima-like - a digital dive let's play and discussion

In this video, Daniel reviews Moonring, a free-to-play indie video game developed by Dean Carter of Fluttermind. Described as a blend of Ultima and rogue-likes, Moonring offers a retro-style, open-world adventure with dungeon crawling, random encounters, loot collection, and a rich backstory. The game is fully free with no microtransactions, created by Carter as a way to give back to the community during the pandemic.

Daniel highlights the game’s immersive world, classic bump combat, and randomly generated dungeons where players explore and battle enemies in turn-based combat. With no traditional XP system, progression comes from leveling up skills tied to in-game gods and completing quests. The game is available on multiple platforms, including Steam and Steam Deck, and can be played with either a controller or keyboard.

Daniel praises the game’s aesthetics, music, and design, calling it ideal for fans of tabletop-style dungeon diving games. He also enjoys the modern features, like the in-game journal, which help manage quests and lore. After playing 11 hours, Daniel endorses the game for its replayability and exploration, stating it’s worth playing even if it weren’t free.

Moonring!
 makes you feel nostalgic about being nostalgic.

I had to stop playing as it was wasting too much work time… will have to wait till it comes out on the Switch… restricting digital games to that little console seems to keep the hours of distraction in check

Did they actually announce a Switch version, or are you just hoping?

This was 2 months ago from the horse’s mouth… :horse:

I did also see this… which made me jealous.

And then I discovered this on the Discord which made me all happy again:

I just played this one a couple months ago and was really impressed with it. Hard to put down from start to finish. And it really managed to make the text your reading important for figuring out what to do next, but also without it ever feeling tedious or confusing.

Amazing job by a solo developer!
