Moon Rings (Review)

Daniel (@dungeondive) examines Moon Rings from Junk Food Games, a solo journaling game where you play a witch navigating a deadly labyrinth to end the reign of a cursed blood moon. Armed with a standard deck of cards and some d12s, you’ll explore a 6x4 grid of face-down cards, each revealing encounters, challenges, and the occasional moon ring needed to complete your ritual.

The system is elegantly simple: roll under or over target numbers depending on the card value, press your luck for additional attempts (at the cost of damage), and manage your blood (HP) alongside magical currencies called Umbral Shift and Mana Touch. Finding moon rings on face cards requires rolling over 10—a proper challenge that makes success feel earned. Each ring comes with ritual text options, allowing you to craft a unique poem for the final ceremony.

The spiral-bound physical edition runs $20 from Tabletop Bookshelf, with a $5 PDF on itch.io. Daniel muses that an elaborate production in the style of Cyberflesh—all matte black boxes and thematic accessories—would elevate this charming folk horror experience considerably.

Does the witch’s labyrinth call to you, or do you prefer your solo journeys with more mechanical crunch?
