Daniel (@dungeondive) is visibly delighted to finally show Mini Rogue: The Council — ‘Season 2’ of one of his favourite games and, he argues, quite possibly the best small-box, rogue-style dungeon crawl ever made. It’s a standalone expansion that’s 100% compatible with the original: everything mixes in, which is exactly what he loves about it. The core loop is unchanged and pure — randomly lay out a nine-room floor, delve left-to-right and top-to-bottom, fight four bosses (the King’s Remains always last), roll the white hero dice for skill and exploding-six combat plus the black dungeon die for what the room holds, and eat food between floors or take damage. Death is final. New here: four heroes, a proper Overlord mode (1v1, 1v3, or an automata deck usable in solo), tightened rules and player aids, and a beefier choose-your-own-adventure campaign. The real joy is the modular Mountain of Torments box — seven pick-and-choose modules (delving decks, pursuing tormentors, cursed jewellery, scrolls) each flagged for how much they raise or lower difficulty. Add the Beyond the Portal art-variant heroes, a Slay the Spire-style vertical map, a treasure-map module, and lore-card promos (including Conan, Tolkien, and Mandalorian nods), and it’s an easy top-ten entry for him.
Daniel prizes Mini Rogue for staying simple while offering endless modular variety. Where’s your line — do bolt-on modules deepen a small-box game, or do they slowly turn the thing you loved for its simplicity into something else?
