One of my favorite genres.
Starting this off with a Touhou (Bullet Hell) style game because they have such great soundtracks apparently.
I love Touhou Luna Nights. This game combines MetroidVania with Bullet Hell.

My favorite genre as well. Currently playing through Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Really smooth and excellent Metroidvania:
I know that the series has always been critically acclaimed, as they say. This looks pretty cool. I’ll put it on my wish list. Thanks.
If anybody hasn’t played AM2R, it’s FANTASTIC.
Very dedicated fan remake of Metroid 2 for PC. Looks like Super Metroid and Fusion in graphics and in play style. It is no longer available, but.. it’s a secret to everyone.
It almost feels gauche to mention it since it is so lauded already, but I consider Hollow Knight as a near perfect game, never mind Metroidvania.
The combat is amazing. It is an excellent RPG with meaningful choices and simple but significant character tweaking - my character feels like my own. The art direction is wonderful, the music superb, the story compelling. It has incredible platforming, and is riddled with well gauged secrets that won’t ruin your run through if you don’t want to engage. Like, each of those aspects are some of the best type examples of any game I have played… …all in the same game.
I seriously feel like everyone who considers themselves a computer gamer should try this game. It is subjectively one of my favourite games, but objectively a masterpiece.
I was going to post on Hollow Knight but I was going to wait.
I will quote my good friend on this one, “Hollow Knight is the best game.”
I think it’s one of the best games ever created, and it was made by a three person team. (As far as I understand.)
Best soundtrack, best art design, best mechanics, best lore…. I totally agree. It’s a masterpiece that I feel every gamer should experience.
That being said, some people just don’t like it, of course.
I feel kind of the same about the film American Movie. I think that every artist and maker should see this documentary.
It took me a minute to get into Hollow Knight. I think because I first played it on Switch and I’m just not much for handheld gaming. I got maybe 25% of the way through before putting it down.
But I finally picked it up on PC and started playing it again right before Silksong released, and I liked it so much I played the whole damn thing and then got Silksong and played about 75% of that before needing a break. I don’t even know how many hours of play that was. Months of nothing but Team Cherry’s world. Absolutely love Hollow Knight.
So glad you were able to give it a second chance. Masterpiece.
Another Masterpiece. All created by one person.
I explained to a friend when describing why they should play Hollow Knight, “Imagine if the creator of Cave Story cloned himself into three people and made another game, that’s Hollow Knight.”
Second only to Hollow Knight, IMO.
And when it comes to incredible one man projects, there’s Axiom Verge.
Tom Happ is an absolute genius.
I bounced off of both Hollow Knight games, as I found them way too punishing. I typically don’t like 2D games with enemy contact damage. I do recognize that they’re both wonderfully made games, just not for me.
But my god did Silksong have a lot of bullshit in it! Enemies doing double damage, crazy contact damage with unpredictable patterns, and save benches that damage you? NOPE! That’s just a total disrespect of my time. Also, some of the boss runbacks are way too long. And too many of the bosses have too many adds.
The weird thing is I enjoy difficult video games like the Nioh series. There’s just something about the difficulty in the Hollow Knight games that rubs me the wrong way. They don’t feel fair to me, and never wanted to take the time to GIT GUD.
My favorite Metroidvania is still Symphony of the Night, and I love the first Metroid Prime game.
I have yet to play Silksong.
