Mappa Mundi - Looking for Something Different?

Daniel (@dungeondive) looks at Mappa Mundi, an exploration and ecology RPG that refuses to fit neatly into any category.

The goal isn’t conquest—it’s understanding. You study monster behaviours while exploring fantastical territories. Monster Hunter without the hunting, or as Daniel puts it, “Monster Studier: The Game.” The solo rules are genuinely unusual: you play as the narrator rather than the characters, using a rudimentary AI of boons, flaws, and inclinations to determine what your chroniclers do at decision points.

Daniel’s main gripe: no randomisers for generating content on the fly. The designers clearly expect solo players to run pre-made adventures—great for some, anathema to improvisers.
