So I was poking around my profile here on the ddq and noticed there’s an option for folks to pin “flair” near their profile picture. Presently, profiles of Patreon patron people pick up a pretty “P”.[1]
The Patreon flair is currently the only option. I was wondering if/how others might be made available? I could see a small ecosystem emerging here akin to BGGs minibadges, depending on how the platform works, which I don’t know. To be honest I forget the name of the forum-platform that’s underneath this site. Happy to poke around the documentation myself if someone (@modius?) can remind me where to find it.
Thanks! “Discourse” was indeed the thing I forgot.
After poking around, it looks like individual users can’t fuss with their flair; admin can build custom user groups and assign flair to everyone in the group, but that’s about it. Question answered: I think doing much with flair would be cumbersome.
That may be possible – I think some admins have programmatically linked flair-types to the “contributor level” that users can acquire by interacting in the forum. But I don’t think there’s an easy option for individuals to create, contribute, or claim bespoke bits of flair to signal, e.g,. favorite game or something like that (more like discord-style flair).
Flair is tied to groups. The Patreon one works because patrons get added to a group that has flair attached. We can create additional groups the same way, but set them to self-join so you’d just add yourself to whichever ones fit.
Could do things like a group per game—Dungeon Degenerates, Vantage, whatever people are into. You’d pick which one to display as your flair.
It’s pretty low effort to set up and maintain—once a group exists, members manage themselves. I’d just need to create new ones occasionally if someone wants something that doesn’t exist yet.
Member levels are attached to groups so we could flair those. Other bits of flair by post count, or leaderboard etc could be done but I’d need to write a program to periodically re-assign members to groups based on their stats.
Would people actually use this? And if so, what games would you want to see?
To be honest I personally probably wouldn’t use it much for signalling which games I like.
I was mainly asking because there might have been a space here for other folks to get engaged with DDQ in a neat way, and that’d be a generally good thing.
Well I’ll just leave it out there.. this would be relatively easy todo if there is an appetite for it. So if you want some special flair to share post it here and I’ll get to it
Daniel could select a piece of flair from time to time (even as infrequently as once a year) and it could be made available here to any user who is a patron at (more or less) that time. So “older” patrons could have access to semi-limited flair… (although honestly if someone really wants a piece of flair and they ask nicely they should get it. No FOMO, bro.)
I might propose, in this august and inaugural year of the Dungeon Dive Golden Torch award, that the torch image itself could be offered as flair to anyone who was a patron prior to 2026, and/or who becomes a patron in 2026. There may be some niceties of file format here to get a “transparent” image that works in dark mode, etc.
MTG-style flarepunintended quote: “Join your torch to mine, and let us together dispel this darkness!”
