I’m looking to upgrade my minis to better paper minis. What do you used?
Not sure if you considered acrylic standees, but I used them to play Forbidden Psalm a while back and found them to be great. These are from a Skinny Mini KS I backed - they’re “cultists” standees with some standee terrain as well.
They look awesome! I’m checking them out right now.
I don’t know if they have a sale going right now, but they run them pretty frequently. Might be worth waiting for one if you decide to go this route.
And I can 2nd acrylic standees being very aesthetically pleasing. I don’t have any skinny minis brand, but acrylics are right behind painted miniatures for my favorite figures to use.
I really like how acrylics look and they are a major space saver. I haven’t done a search yet for other makers. Do you know of shops that sell them too?
Honestly, all the ones I have came with games that designed them for that specific game. And then League of Dungeoneers did a separate crowdfunding campaign for all their standees to have acrylic versions, if you’re looking for another option for a big set of fantasy-themed ones.
But to buy small sets at retail? I don’t know of any competition out there for skinny mini… They’re the big one. And I will say that there are potential quality control issues with other versions. The ones that come with the game Vagrantsong didn’t quite fit their bases all the time and occasionally bust a base trying to force them in. So if you go with a smaller company just be sure to check reviews.
Oh! they have late pledges.
There’s another manufacturer I’ve used (Arcknight) that is decent. They’re a thinner acrylic and slightly cheaper, but they look great on the table. There’s also GTG Minis that are similar to Arcknight, though I think a bit more expensive and you need to buy their bases separate.
I have a crowdfunded project coming soon-ish called The Vault of Mini Things that’s more classic fantasy based.
So yeah - I like standees. ![]()
I’m looking at Arcknight and i love vault of mini things. I’m really liking acrylic standees.
These are pretty awesome! Adding to my bookmarks for the next time I go looking for stuff.
I’d love the doorways and furniture from Vault of Mini Things. All that stuff I hate painting ready to go. Seems as if the late pledge window is closed though.
i just tried and yeah its closed sadly
Yep, though worth noting those ones are not acrylic. Card stock with a coating. But man do they look vibrant. And the multi-terrain exchangeable bases are pretty sweet too. I’d have jumped on that if I’d known about it at the time. ![]()
I followed him and when he does another i’m gonna back it.
You can watch tinkerhousegames.com and their mailing list too. Seems like they sell their sci-fi terrain that started out as a crowdfunding campaign, so they’ll probably sell this stuff too.
For me, I’ve learned that I really enjoy painting individual miniatures - unique sculpts that you’d typically use for hero models. I burned out on painting the same models (grunts, enemy monster types) over and over again, so these types of standees can be a great compromise. I still get to paint but the time to get games to the table is much shorter. Regardless, if you play lots of miniature agnostic skirmish style games, standees are a great option to really speed things up. You can basically download the rules from DriveThru or the publisher and be playing in less than an hour. What a time to be alive! ![]()

I think this series is pretty cool!
I tend to do an internet search with a few key words for the kind of mini I have in mind, and then just scroll through Images results until I find some I like. I have discovered a bunch of cool companies this way that I doubt I would have otherwise. Good luck with the hunt!
(I noticed too late your specification of paper minis, sorry… Perhaps the meeples are still close enough to be considered
)
I feel the same way. There’s rarely a repeated sculpt that I want to paint over and over. But I also just roll with grey miniatures sometimes. Paint while we play whatever game we’re playing. And put it away until next time. My Shadows of Brimstone collection is so haphazardly painted…
But standees are pretty awesome for filling in and replacing the grey plastic. I’m all about that these days.
Mork Borg Meeples… I never even would’ve thought about this potentiality. A+
Its all good. I did see these before and really liked them. I use paper minis the most cause they are cheap. thanks!
I don’t have the patience to paint minis unless i really like it. I don’t mind coloring but painting the same model over and over. its not for me. im not surprised you got burnt out
