Daniel (@dungeondive) digs into two Escape the Dark Sector expansions — Mission Pack 2: Mutant Syndrome and Mission Pack 3: Quantum Rift — bought ahead of finally playing Dark Sector with friends. As ever, the design philosophy is simply to mix everything together for maximum variety: new chapter cards across all three acts, bosses, crews, items and dice all shuffle into your existing piles, and each pack now helpfully ships rule cards rather than burying its rules in a booklet.
Mutant Syndrome adds a mutation die and rotate-once mutation cards that let afflicted crew boost rolls — gruesome flavour, great art. Quantum Rift introduces a rift die and numbered artifact cards as you’re flung through time, yielding wonderfully varied chapters: space-westerns, samurai, Roman centurions, pirate treasure — and, delightfully, cards and artifacts (a rotten apple, a stale loaf) lifted straight from Escape the Dark Castle, sparking his idea to rig a crossover between the two games. He also renews his recurring plea: publishers should sell expansions without the oversized boxes, since everything fits in the base box anyway. A loving look that mostly showcases the art.
Daniel loves that the Dark Sector expansions just mix straight in — no separating, no fuss — and wishes they shipped without the big boxes. How do you feel about expansion packaging: collectible boxes, or cards-only to save shelf space?
