So as I wait to here back from this publisher about the game I submitted to them, I have an itch that needs scratching.
So I am going to start scratching it. Over the past couple of months I have finally replaced a bunch of parts on my 3D printer and am now ready to dive into my dream project.
For years I have wanted to get the two expansions for the Dark World Board Game but they are both way to rare and over priced to collect.
So It got me thinking, why not just find some retro minis and replicate the boards either out of foam OR 3D print them.
I have found all of the STL’s for Heroquest and most for WarHammer Quest and even some for Dark World’s expansion, Village of Fear and am currently in print mode for those.
In doing so… that made the gears in my brain turn… why not take the rules for Dark World and mix in the rules for HQ and WHQ.
Which brings me to writing this. It would be cool to hear from you all about what aspects of the games I have listed and the stuff that you dont like as much.
When the rules are finished ill share them with everyone who is interested in it. ill also be posting my miniature painting and terrain crafting pics for the game here as well.
After the let down that was the news of the new WarHammer Quest and how the community has been let down that its so far removed from what the original game was and to a point at some of the criticisms of Heroquest’s combat rules are that i have seen I kinda wanna make something that hits everything that made those old games so great.
Right now my main dilemma that I have yet to settle on is whether I want to use a dungeon board like HQ or the modular tile system from WHQ. Im kind of leaning towards HQ as that could be set up with the Dark World village of Fear terrain. So players can have combat in other places and not just dungeons.
Found these files on thingiverse for modular houses. Dont know if im going to use these or just recreate the Dark World and maybe the original Mordheim buildings out of foam for this project.
What a great idea. The toy factor of Dark World is off the chart. Depending on the work and scope you want to put in, I personally would sugguest combinding Heroquest only as WHQ’s rules are more complex and really need a modular dungeon to shine.
I think Heroquest on its own would already work with Dark World components out of the box - i.e. the evil player coming up with more content, traps, events, rules and interaction per room or per tile. If it is solo / coop rules, Axian quest system / random rolling table will work very well with this as well to generate content per room.
Thanks. Yeah Dark World is essentially the non RPG version of Heroquest. I am still debating if i wanted to go the fully modular dungeon tile route or just the static board of HeroQuest. I like both types so its a hard decision for me!!!
But some of the hero types of WHQ and monsters and maybe even the difficulty scaling, weapons like pistols and hero leveling I am wanting to incorporate.
Dark World is the game I had when I was a kid, still own it, but it is desperately lacking content department haha. I love the combat of the game, they did that well but everytime I have played it over the years with people, if you dont kill a monster the question always pops up…. does the amount i attack it for come off its health? No? Thats dumb lol.
Its like people really wanted that game to be more like an RPG and not a straight forward board game.
So adding in the dungeons, Items, Weapons, armor and especially magic items would propel the game forward drastically.
I also remember that the 2003 Dungeons and Dragons board game exists, so I downloaded the rule booklets for those, the player and DM guides, so I might add in some of that stuff. I forgot that that game is also a Heroquest clone. But also allows for overworld terrain modularity. Which is something I’d like to add in as well. Hence the modular buildings i started to print out.
So here are all the Miniatures from the three Dark World games. Pretty much all of them have equivalents in HeroQuest and Warhammer Quest. I just wish I could find an STL for the dragon or something that has that retro vibe to its sculpt.
The Cobrans from this game ill just be switching out for these Beastmen stls I found online. For the Hobgoblins, I will just be using the Warhammer Quest Orcs and paint their skin red.
I am still debating on what to do with the three game boards for Dark World.
The main games board has a mini-dungeon and a ruined castle area. The ruined castle would be a cool place to put a quest in, but the mini-dungeon is kind of rendered useless for this project if I am going to use the HerQuest board. So figuring out what to put in that space is a problem that needs a solution. Maybe a forest. Maybe use the Mordheim ruined city buildings in that spot.
I know I want to keep the Dragon’s Gate board as the troll cave would be a cool place to send the heroes. I will also most likely make it more 3D with different elevations so the chasm has a little bit more of a “threat” factor. Any ways, It will look a lot cooler when playing the game if it was more 3D lol.
I am still debating if i am just going to keep the Village the same and just recreate the building out of foam, or use some 3D printed modular buildings so I can change it up and use it as different villages.
I also found these STL files for the bushes. I also found some STL files for some tree made for Gloomhaven. Maybe a modular forest maze where the dungeon goes… or just make a new board for the modular forest.
