Channel Update

After roughly three months away, Daniel (@dungeondive) returns to explain the silence and, in the process, states the operating principle the channel has run on ever since. Two reasons for the gap: the recording room becomes unbearable under lights in summer, and — the real one — his hobbies move in extreme cyclical phases. Something clicks, the season turns, and he is wholly elsewhere. This summer it was David Lynch: every film rewatched, Twin Peaks: The Return finally watched with his wife, every book on Lynch he could find bought. Fire Walk With Me is his favourite; he has long wanted to write a book about it.

The announcement is that the channel will widen to books and film. Not, he is careful to say, as a geek-culture channel — more a personal vlog about the fantasy, horror and weird fiction he loves, on the grounds that his taste in games, films and books is one taste, not three. A stack of autumn horror reading is shown off: Matthew M. Bartlett, Norman Partridge’s Dark Harvest, Bradbury’s The October Country, Sturgeon, King’s Cycle of the Werewolf.

He is blunt about the cost. Some people came for board games and will leave; that is fine. He cannot force interest he doesn’t have, and the channel only continues if it stays interesting to him.

Is a creator’s honesty about cyclical interest a strength or a liability when an audience subscribed to one specific thing?
