Apple Requiring Patreon to Move to In-App Purchases

Hope this doesn’t cut much into Dungeon Dive’s subscribing base. But Apple is requiring Patreon to move their in-app subscriptions on Apple products to Apple’s subscription billing by 11/1/26. It looks like if Apple users pay their Patreon fees through the app on an iPhone or iPad then Apple will take a 30% cut as commission. Only for newly signing up users though? Greedy anyway.

From the FAQ:

How much of my business will be affected by Apple’s in-app purchase system?

For most creators, very little:

  • Your existing members are not affected. Apple’s fee does not apply retroactively to people who already support you.
  • Most U.S. fans won’t be affected either. Thanks to the current court ruling, U.S. fans on iOS can choose web checkout, which avoids Apple’s 30% fee.
  • Only new memberships purchased directly inside the iOS app are subject to Apple’s fee, and this primarily applies to non-U.S. fans.

I don’t use any Apple products when enjoying the Dungeon Dive. I’m confused by the ruling even after reading it but then I still haven’t finished my morning cup o’ Joe.

I don’t use Apple stuff either, but figured I’d put the info out there. There’s a few articles out there breaking it down but I think they’re also over-blowing the 30% commission aspect. Trying to make it sound like Apple’s always going to get that cut. But from what I can tell it’s only for new subscribers who use the iOS Patreon App to sign up (as opposed to a web browser).

It also states that if too many Patreon creators use unsupported billing models or disable transactions in iOS then Apple will drop the Patreon app from their store.
