Part nine takes Daniel (@dungeondive) into Sen’s Fortress, which he calls one of the coolest deathtrap dungeons in games — a tower of swinging blades, pressure plates and arrow traps that can be turned on the enemies patrolling it.
Before the climb he settles unfinished business, recovering 6,000 souls dropped while grabbing the Wolf Ring and finally affording the 20,000-soul Crest of Artorias. That leads into the episode’s best digression: a genuinely reassuring lecture on the death penalty. Losing 30,000 souls feels like the end of the world the first time — he remembers the forum posts saying I’ll never financially recover from this — but the longer you play, the less it matters. Lost souls are lost souls. Stats barely matter beyond meeting the requirements for the weapon and armour you actually want, and pouring points into vitality is, he says plainly, easy mode.
The tower yields a rare Ring of Sacrifice, a divine blessing he will almost certainly never use, and a hidden merchant reachable only by a jump he openly dreads — stranded there selling the Guts greatsword to anyone building toward Berserk. He also flags a moment later in the game where Dark Souls breaks its own established rules, a criticism he’s saving.
The Iron Golem falls without Daniel landing a blow: summoned NPC Iron Tarkus solos it while he cheers from the sidelines.
Daniel’s advice is that stats barely matter past your weapon requirements. Does that match how you played your first Souls game, or did you over-level everything?
