A film: /She is Conann/

I just accidentally discovered She is Conann. I don’t know much of anything about “canonical” Conan the Barbarian, and I’m not even done watching this, but I think it deserves a post. It is a bizarre film. It will likely be polarizing to different folks for different reasons. I am finding it to be one of the most visually and narratively interesting and challenging dark/gory fantasy films I’ve seen since the animated The Spine of Night (which is also awesome in its own, different way).

That is all.

I went trawling for a trailer. She is Conann does not appear to mirror the plot lines of any Conan story I’m aware of – the name and her girlbarian nature seem to the only similarity i can see.

But yikes… also stumbled across this french film:

Oh nice! Thanks for the rec, looks interesting! I just got done recording the Patreon exclusive monthly recap and I spent a lot of time in that reviewing The Substance, one of the finest works of cinema I’ve ever seen!.

Anyhow, with movies on the mind, I’ve added She is Conann to my list. Looks really interesting.

I thought this was beautiful and a ton of fun. Weird and strange in that perfect (for me) 80s fantasy kind of way.

I re-watched it not too long ago and would recommend it more emphatically. It’s one of weirdest Weird fiction movies I’ve seen and somehow (to me) does justice to the theme in a completely unexpected way. Doesn’t make a ton of sense but that was never a requirement for me.

I actually own she is Conan on Bluray!

It’s a French arthouse style film, it’s a feminist take on John Milius’s Conan the barbarian.

I really enjoyed it but I also was familiar with the director’s work going in.
It’s not for everyone but it is rather unique.

Some more thoughts on She is Conann. It has the same kind of psychedelic fantasy vibe as Mandy, but it doesn’t use the tired old girl in the refrigerator trope. It’s purposefully a work of LGBT art house cinema, and yet it’s focus remains on the weird and fantastical. Another film it reminded me of is Crispin Glover’s fever dream of a movie - What is It?

She is Conann is one of the best looking movies I’ve seen. In this I was reminded of Legend, especially in the use of glitter confetti as snow and debris constant circulating around the obviously-built sets.

Even after watching the trailer, I knew it wasn’t a movie to make sense, and that’s totally OK. It’s more of a tone piece.

Far too often fantasy cinema is afraid to get weird, so if you’re looking for something that is unabashedly weird and bizarre, and yet still highly entertaining, look no further than She is Conann.
