The Oracle Story Generator - a tool for creating adventures and campaigns (solo RPG)

Daniel (@dungeondive) examines The Oracle Story Generator from Nord Games, a box set of five card decks themed around contracts and bounties, simple side quests, relics and artifacts, epic adventures, and political intrigue. Each deck splits into five sub-decks, and the generative engine is simple: draw one card each for actor, action, subject, intent and development to seed a story, then roll the D4 sub-chart on any card for extra nuance.

He demonstrates by spinning up three plots live. A scholar racing to destroy a poisonous swamp before a dormant creature regenerates becomes a layered side quest about draining wetlands and surviving noxious gas. A boastful merchant’s “trick item” of revenge turns into a monkey’s-paw demon of greed waiting to devour his empire. And an epic seed — a cursed warlord bribing the Specter of Death for immortality, guarded by a legion of constructs — sketches a whole campaign’s big bad. The decks even mix and match thanks to differing card backs.

His one substantial criticism: the instruction manual wastes too many pages on pre-written sample stories when it could have packed in more random generators — the actual reason to buy a tool like this. Still, at around $40 he considers it good value.

Do you reach for structured “draw one of each” story prompts like these, or do you prefer freeform oracles that leave more of the connective tissue to you?
