Any other fans of Maladum painting and playing? I’m just finishing up painting all the bad guys and four heroes so I can start the campaign! I love this game so much. The scenery is amazing.
y’know, I can get cynical sometimes about all the plastic involved in minis, and even about board game photography, but this is just dope. One of the few times I can recall that I think I sort of “get it.” Thanks for sharing!
I backed the Maladum KS Edition when I was on a Rangers of Shadow Deep and Five Leagues from the Borderlands tear and wanted the awesome miniatures and terrain.
I didn’t hold out much hope for the Maladum game itself ![]()
That said, I satiated my impromptu fantasy miniature skirmish binge a year ago. A beautiful Maladum box has recently turned up and it just sits there looking lovely.
I’d be super keen to hear what you think of the Maladum game and how it plays.
Ah the game is great. I am already a huge Battle Systems fan and Core Space fan too so I’m quite familiar with the gameplay. Maladum seems to have upped it a notch though and brought in some new ideas which I love. I can highly recommend it. I find the number of minis manageable too in terms of painting them. I’m nearly done so nearly ready to start the campaign!
I have been playing its older brother Core Space and it’s an excellent system, totally moddable. The base game has a threat timer but you can simply not use it and it doesn’t change the game. The little tokens for gear and ammo are fun to use and really work in a sci fi/cyberpunk setting. The expansions add event cards (which I love!) and usually a new NPC type (cops, scavengers, journalists(!), gangsters) which can be added to the random procedural story generation. It’s a complete RPG system.
However I did not know how well it would port over to fantasy which is why I didn’t buy it. Also I didn’t think the terrain worked as well in fantasy as it does in sci fi where all the right angles and boxiness make more sense. However from what I’ve seen since, the fantasy terrain looks good. I’m tempted to pick a box of dungeon walls up if they ever sell that, to use with Heroquest.
So all in all a great RPG system and very well supported by the designer. Top quality components and art all through the company’s offerings. Very moddable system that you can do a lot with.
How did they up it and what new ideas did they bring in? It was always great for sci fi; are there any ways in which they tailored it to fantasy, or reasons why it works well in fantasy?
Ah good question. There seems to be a few tweaks, that on the surface seem a little more up to date. As if they have honed the system after doing CS and First Born. Loot seems better organised with regards to exclusive and rare stuff. Easier to organise and select what you need for a mission. So much interaction with the terrain. It just feels like there’s more to investigate and interact with. I haven’t fully played it yet, these are my initial thoughts.
I haven’t played it. Huge terrain boxes are a bit too much for me, but those photos make it look amazing on the table!
I might see if they published the rules online so I can update my game with the new ideas.
There’s a hexcrawl out already ![]()

I have Core Space. Is this just like, the fantasy version of it? Sort of like a “5 Parsecs from Home” and “5 Leagues from the Boarderland” situation?
What kinds of new ideas?
this one also falls under the category of, why do I need this. I think the rules work great for science fiction, but I wonder how they work for fantasy. I have read that the spells are cool, but I don’t have any details.
I have edged and built all of the terrain, but still need to read the rules on this one.
The rules are pretty fun. It’s fun, keeping track of the ammunition and playing with a lovely item counters and character boards is very immersive.
this game is my latest obsession. I loved core space and this one is definitely more complex but has the same amazing AI. For my money this is the best AI in a co-op game ever. Maybe I’m something like wandering galaxy. In the dungeon this is what I have always been looking for in hero quest type games.
Daniel! When are you going to review this game?
I won’t be. I loved the SF version, but I just don’t have the space to keep things set up, and the set up/tear down time was too long for me. If I had a dedicated table to keep these kinds of games set up, I’d definitely cover them more and play them.
That makes sense. It took us 45 min to set up our second scenario last night. If you don’t have the room for all of the stuff, it won’t work either,
Yeah. That was my experience with Core Space. A real bummer because I loved the game! Such a fun sandbox.
I still might try Maladium at some point.
Learning it can beat great. Play the tutorial mission. But then maybe read character/party creation.. Print the icons psge and all the skill sheets and the turn order
