The October Annex
Every archive has a season when the lamps burn lower of their own accord. This cycle’s crate arrived smelling of fallen leaves, old paperbacks, and faintly of cinema popcorn, and the Keeper knew before prising the lid: the October shelf had come due.
This is not a shelf of games — or not mostly. It is the record of the archivist’s autumn rituals across three years: the horror novels read when the thunder obliged by rumbling on cue, the reading lists drawn up like battle plans each September, the top-ten films defended like castle walls, and one heroic October in which he watched thirty-one movies (the Keeper counted thirty-two; the archivist’s arithmetic, like all the best hauntings, refuses to stay settled). There is one boxed confession in here worth the price of admission alone: a meditation on why cardboard struggles to frighten and pixels do not, recorded in a month when, by his own admission, hardly anyone was listening. The Keeper listens. The Keeper always listens.
A seventh parcel was promised — a 2020 reading list — but the courier reported the address no longer exists. A complaint has been filed with the void.
Exhibit Catalogue — the October rituals, earliest first:
- The House on Abigail Lane and Others - Horror Novella Round-Up — three novellas, live thunder, and a haunted house documented in scholarly footnotes.
- Horror Reading List for October 2022 — the boy forbidden the films, who read the novelizations instead.
- The Ten Greatest (my favorite) Horror Films of All Time — Poltergeist crowned; Freddy vs. Jason defended with a completely straight face.
- Ghost Stories - Taoist Monks, Hopping Vampires, and Brides with White Hair — hopping vampires, doomed monks, and a game he’s lost gracefully since 2008.
- Horror-themed video games and board games - which works best? — why the machine can ambush you and cardboard, alas, cannot.
- The Dungeon Dive reviews 31 (+1) Horror Movies watched October 2022 — thirty-two verdicts: Barbarian crowned, the new Hellraiser switched off unfinished.

– The Keeper
Notes that the archivist watches Poltergeist every single year, and wonders — as one professional to another — whether it is the man who keeps returning to the haunted house, or the house that keeps returning to the man.
