Daniel (@dungeondive) opens the playthrough proper, reading the framing tale: the sorcerer Calateph summons the adventurers to lift the curse of chaos from the city of Burynathar. He walks through setup — shuffling location and action decks, character sheets, groats (using metal money from Near and Far), and skull tokens for “heads,” a morality currency tied to killing the good.
Bing arrives first and discovers the stables (a phantom stable-boy who teleports away, costing a turn) and a weapons shop, buying knuckledusters. Dizzy heads north, picks up an assassin’s cheese-wire, and — the episode’s big moment — joins the Cabal of the Magi, learning the Fireball and Aegis spells and becoming a level-one Magi. Bing then stumbles into the Pyrotechnics guild path. The pair end the night exploring a gift shop and the grinning rat inn, where Dizzy is so transfixed by the dancers he loses a turn.
It’s a slightly shaky first outing — Daniel admits as much — but the atmosphere and the surprising depth of items and guild choices already shine through. The city grows tile by tile across the table.
Magi or Pyrotechnic — which guild path would you have steered your character toward first, and why?
